For boaters looking to tow a lightweight fishing boat, personal watercraft, aluminum runabout, or compact center-console, the Ford Maverick offers an appealing combination of efficiency, technology, capability and a starting price of $28,145. No, it won’t replace a full-size truck. But, when equipped with Ford’s 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine and available 4K Tow Package ($795) and All-Wheel Drive ($2,220) its towing capacity rises to 4,000 pounds. That translates to aluminum fishing boats, compact bay boats, bass boats, tandem PWC trailers and more.
Ford’s turbocharged EcoBoost engine delivers low-end torque for pulling up a slippery ramp. Combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the powertrain provides smooth acceleration whether merging onto the interstate or climbing grades. The available AWD adds more confidence.
As important, the Maverick’s size makes it better in tight spots than a fill-size truck. Visibility is excellent, and Ford’s available 360-degree camera system further simplifies lining up and backing down.
Technology? Ford’s latest driver-assistance features—including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with trailer coverage, lane-centering assistance, and rear cross-traffic alert—help reduce driving stress. The infotainment system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, allowing boaters to access their favorite apps.

The Maverick’s versatile Flexbed cargo box features tie-downs and available power outlets. The numerous accessory mounting points make it easy to organize boating gear. The bed’s relatively low height makes loading equipment easier than with larger pickups.
Fuel economy remains one of Maverick’s big advantages. Owners who spend weekdays commuting, but hit the water on weekends won’t have to sacrifice efficiency simply to own a tow vehicle. Compared with many midsize and full-size trucks, the Maverick offers substantially lower fuel consumption during everyday driving.
Shopping? The Hyundai Santa Cruz ($29,750, base price) is Maverick’s closest competitor, albeit at a bit higher price. For trailer boaters who tow two tons or less, the 2027 Ford Maverick strikes an impressive balance. It combines maneuverability, smart technology, excellent efficiency, and genuine towing capability into one affordable package. While serious offshore anglers and large wakeboat owners will still need a heavier-duty truck, the Maverick proves that enjoying life on the water doesn’t always require driving the biggest pickup on the road.
