About 25 years ago, predominant thinking in charter circles was that the yacht with the most toys wins. Snorkeling gear and water skis were common, but a yacht with inflatable tow toys, a waterslide and a bunch of kayaks was a rarer find.
Today, a jam-packed toy box is an expectation. That means crew aboard today’s motoryachts have to think more creatively to stand out in the marketplace.
A good example of this is the 184-foot Baba’s, which is not resting on its laurels of being the biggest Hargrave ever built. Baba’s charters with a 42-foot Hydra-Sports tender and promises to “make fishing dreams come true,” even letting potential clients know which months are the best to book if they want to chase certain species in the Bahamas.
Another good example is the 242-foot Lürssen Atlas—a big charter yacht by any standard in terms of length overall, but it goes against the grain of screen time by offering old-school, family-friendly fun for actual togetherness. Its stash of games includes Trivial Pursuit, Uno, Scrabble, Monopoly, Jenga, Rummikub and Risk. Atlas is also recently refitted, so guests can make the most of its 18-seat dining table, cinema, spa, discotheque and wine lounge.
Yet another example is the more recently launched Benetti Oasis 40M Contigo, which brings the builder’s reimagined aft-deck design to the charter market. The entire point of this deck is to help guests be even more in touch with nature, friends and family.
What all of these yachts have in common is mindset. Yes, they have the expected toys, but they also maximize certain types of fun. Nowadays, one might say, it’s these yachts with the best attitudes that win.
