Island Packet Launches 42 Motor Sailer

Island Packet Yachts has introduced the 42 Motor Sailer, a new addition to its Next Generation fleet that blends the livability of a motor yacht with the sailing pedigree the brand is known for. Designed with long-range cruisers in mind, the new 42-footer offers indoor helm control, versatile rigging, and enough tankage for extended offshore passages.

With its full keel, fiberglass hull, and traditional styling, the 42 Motor Sailer stays true to Island Packet’s signature profile. But the design introduces several key modernizations. Most notably, the deck-level salon and helm are enclosed, allowing sailors to steer, reef, and sheet sails in complete protection from the elements. An electric winch services the mainsail and self-tending working jib, both operable from the interior helm station. A sliding side door offers quick access to the side deck, while an aft window-door combination opens onto the large cockpit—creating a customizable indoor/outdoor living space.

Belowdecks, the layout centers on comfort and functionality. The large owner’s stateroom aft has an island berth and private ensuite head, while a forward guest stateroom has a double berth and space for an optional washer/dryer. The up-galley adjoins the main salon, maximizing social flow and natural light.

The boat’s rig has returned to Island Packet’s favored Solent-style setup: a fully battened main paired with a self-tacking working jib mounted on a foredeck track. A lightweight 170% reacher or asymmetrical sail is available for improved performance off the wind, deployed from the integral bow platform with Harken furling systems. All control lines lead aft to cockpit winches for easy single- or double-handed sailing.

Under power, the 42 Motor Sailer cruises comfortably at 8 to 8.5 knots with its 110-hp Yanmar turbo diesel. The model carries 320 gallons of fuel and 130 gallons of freshwater, making it well-suited for extended motoring when conditions demand. A SureShade cockpit cover is available for added sun and rain protection.
