How would you describe your design philosophy for creating the ideal yacht?
My design philosophy is about achieving the perfect balance between functionality, elegance, and personal expression. Each yacht is a unique embodiment of the owner’s vision, lifestyle, and how they wish to experience life at sea. The ideal yacht should blend striking aesthetics with comfort and practicality, providing the perfect environment for relaxation, entertainment, or adventure. Great emphasis is placed on the flow of spaces, the use of natural light, and the careful selection of materials, ensuring that every detail enhances both the visual and functional aspects of the yacht. Innovation, craftsmanship, and adaptability are key, as each project is tailored to meet the specific desires of the owner. The ultimate goal is to create a yacht that feels like a personal sanctuary, where beauty and functionality coexist seamlessly.
When designing a superyacht, what are the key features you prioritize to ensure both luxury and functionality?
When designing a superyacht, the focus is on creating a seamless blend of beauty and practicality. Key features include optimizing space to ensure open, flowing layouts that enhance both comfort and usability. Versatility is essential, with spaces designed to serve multiple functions—whether for entertaining, relaxation, or privacy. The choice of materials and finishes prioritizes not only aesthetics but also durability and suitability for the marine environment. Advanced technology is thoughtfully integrated into every aspect, from climate control to entertainment systems, ensuring an elevated experience that’s easy to navigate and enjoy. Ultimately, the aim is to craft a refined, personalized environment where elegance and functionality are perfectly balanced, allowing owners and guests to experience the highest levels of comfort and enjoyment on board.
What are some of the biggest design challenges you face when working on superyachts, and how do you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges in superyacht design is optimizing space while maintaining an open, inviting layout. Every inch must be used wisely to balance functionality and aesthetics. To address this, we incorporate innovative, multi-purpose solutions that ensure spaces can serve various needs without sacrificing comfort or style. Another challenge is integrating the yacht’s complex technical systems—such as lighting, climate control, and entertainment—while preserving a seamless, visually cohesive design. Close collaboration with engineers helps us discreetly embed these systems into the overall aesthetic. Equally important is designing both the exterior and interior as a unified concept. By overseeing both, we ensure a fluid connection between the yacht’s outer form and its interior spaces. This holistic approach enhances the sense of flow and continuity, making the yacht feel like a cohesive whole, where the exterior reflects the character and elegance of the interiors, and vice versa. It allows us to create a fully integrated experience that feels effortless yet highly personalized to the owner’s vision.
Can you tell us about any emerging trends in yacht design that cater specifically to the charter market?
In my opinion, the charter market is seeing a growing demand for yachts that prioritize flexibility and versatility. Clients have varying needs, so adaptable designs—like modular spaces that can transform from lounges to dining areas—are increasingly popular. Wellness features are also in high demand, with many yachts incorporating spa-like amenities such as saunas and gyms for relaxation. Additionally, eco-conscious design has become a key trend, as charter clients prioritize sustainable materials, energy-efficient systems, and hybrid propulsion to minimize their environmental impact. I’ve also noticed a rise in the demand for pet-friendly features, allowing clients to bring their pets along on their journeys. This includes dedicated pet areas and easy access to outdoor spaces. Finally, seamless integration of user-friendly technology for entertainment and climate control is essential, enabling clients to tailor their experience effortlessly. These trends reflect the evolving expectations for comfort, sustainability, and inclusivity in yacht design.
Can you tell us about any of your current projects you’re working on and what makes them unique or exciting?
I am currently involved in several exciting projects that showcase the pinnacle of yacht design. One of these is the Settesettanta, a bespoke 57-metre yacht by Heesen, where I also serve as the Owner Representative. This yacht exemplifies luxury and performance, featuring a fully custom design tailored to the owner’s preferences, ensuring exceptional comfort and style. Additionally, I am working on two other 50-metre projects with Heesen, blending modern aesthetics with advanced engineering to enhance both performance and comfort. I am also working on the Majesty 160 by Gulf Craft, set for delivery in 2026. This yacht aims to redefine elegance with its rich and contemporary interiors and stunning exteriors, all designed by the award-winning Cristiano Gatto Design Studio in Venice. The Majesty 160 is a unique model that addresses clients’ needs with refined design and cutting-edge architecture, ensuring a sophisticated and luxurious experience on the water. Following that, I’m involved in the Evo 40 Metre by Van der Valk, which stands out for its striking design that seamlessly integrates both exterior and interior spaces. The clean lines and innovative layout create an inviting atmosphere, perfect for relaxation and entertainment.
What role do sustainability and eco-friendly materials play in your design process and how do you integrate these aspects into your projects?
Considering that the cost of a yacht is made up of 70% labour, the lives of those who build yachts represent 70% of the yacht’s sustainability. Ensuring that all workers operate in a safe and healthy environment, fully respecting their rights, makes yachting one of the most eco-sustainable sectors. Thus, eco-sustainability lies in the liveability of the working environment, which is ensured here, in contrast to large industrial spaces like assembly lines. It is also important to note that all the timber we use for the onboard components and furniture comes from recycled materials rather than deforestation. This commitment not only supports sustainable practices but also contributes to the overall eco-friendliness of our yacht designs.
What is your vision for the future of yachting?
The yacht of the future must honour its purpose, serving the dreams and desires of its owner. It should cradle all guests in a cocoon of comfort, welcoming even our furry companions and ensuring accessibility for those with differing abilities. In this vision, respect for those who craft these vessels and a deep reverence for nature are paramount. The essence of exploration should intertwine with the utmost comfort, guiding yachting into a new era. I believe this harmonious blend of functionality and serenity will define the future of yachting, allowing us to journey the seas while nurturing the beauty that surrounds us.
