Cruising the Thousand Islands

Stretching along 50 scenic miles of the St. Lawrence River, the Thousand Islands archipelago is among North America’s top cruising destinations. These intricate waterways lead past Gilded Age mansions and secluded coves to ports rich with historic, cultural and culinary offerings.

Things to Do

Charles Dickens wrote that the Thousand Islands’ beauty “can hardly be imagined.” Of the 1,864 islands in this chain between Ontario and New York State, the Admiralty Group is a favorite cruising ground for its breathtaking channels and sheltered back bays. Explore Wanderer’s Channel, Half Moon Bay, Beaurivage Island, McDonald Island and Thwartway (aka Leek) Island, a great stop for secluded beaches, hiking and wildlife.

The region’s beauty attracted many Gilded Age elite, who built the sprawling mansions along Millionaire’s Row. The crown jewel is Boldt Castle on Heart Island, open for tours from May to October. The castle’s heartbreaking history as what was supposed to be a tribute of love only amplifies its beauty. The opulent 28-room Singer Castle, downriver on Dark Island, is also worth a tour, as is the Rock Island Lighthouse upstream.

The Antique Boat Museum in Clayton features more than 320 freshwater boats and holds an annual antique boat show in the summer. History buffs can head to Fort Henry in Kingston, and to history museums in Clayton and Gananoque, Ontario, which is also home to the beloved Thousand Islands Playhouse, called “the most charming theater in Canada” by the Canadian Broadcasting Company.

The Thousand Islands are exceptional fishing grounds. Sign Man Charters offers a combined charter and traditional shore dinner. The area also has more than 30 golf courses, including the Lake Course and Old Course (dating to 1894) at Thousand Islands Country Club on Wellesley Island.

Food and Drink

The Thousand Islands wine region is growing in popularity. Thousand Islands Winery in Alexandria Bay produces 23 varieties as well as mead and dessert wine. Coyote Moon Vineyards in Clayton is known for its fun atmosphere, and the Taco and Tings food truck.

Clayton has the widest range of dining options. Clipper Inn Restaurant & Lounge is known for seafood. Wood Boat Brewery pairs pizza and pub grub with its pours. Koffee Kove is a favorite for traditional breakfast and lunch fare, while Bella’s Bistro takes a more creative approach. Make an obligatory stop at 1000 Islands River Rat Cheese for its squeaky cheese curds, sharp cheddars and 1000 Islands dressing.

Across the border, AquaTerra in Kingston serves refined seafood and other fare with stellar water views. In Gananoque, check out Maple Leaf Restaurant for Czech and Eastern European dishes, and Riva for exceptional Italian food.
